I get asked a number of the same questions repeatedly. Would it be helpful to you all if I started posting/tagging some FAQ's and How-To's?

(I realize I accidentally posted this without the ability to reply, so I will consider a like as a yes.)

Hello! I love your hair, I was wondering how you keep it so healthy? I've only dyed my hair a couple times and it's fried.

Thank you, though sorry to hear about the fried hair! Here are some tips I suggest for keeping hair healthy:

- Minimize heat. I blow dry my hair on the cool setting and only heat style about once a month.

- Don’t bleach hair that’s already been bleached! I only apply bleach to my roots as they grow in. I fade out my old color with dandruff shampoo until it’s light enough to dye over.

- Condition (and/or deep condition) on a regular basis.

- Trim regularly. Whenever I bleach my roots (~every 6 weeks), I also trim my ends.

- I suggest Argan Oil to everyone. It adds some nice extra shine to your hair.

Haaaaaay girl. i know you wash your hair with cold water and upside down buut i've had vampire red for like two weeks and its fading a lot. how can i make it last longer?

Heeey! I’m sorry for the very slow reply! Since you’re only using one color, try adding a couple drops of vampire red to your conditioner. Let it sit for about 3-5 minutes whenever you shower. That should help keep it nice and vibrant for you! :)

Have you ever tried 'n rage intense pink? If so, what's your opinion on it? :o

I have not used that shade in particular, but I have had good results from their Twisted Teal and Plum Purple colors, even over natural hair. They both lasted longer than any other colors I’ve used, but I will caution that most people I’ve talked to about ‘n Rage have had negative experiences with the brand.

Is the up keep on your hair hard?

I don’t really consider it to be. It takes me between 2-6 hours whenever I dye it, but I only dye it once a month, so the time exchange is worth it to me. :)

Each jar of color is $10, but I usually don’t use more than 1/4th of a jar of each color. If you look at it by number of colors, ~$90, if you look at it by amount of dye actually used, a much more reasonable $25. :)

hello! well I'm thinking of dying only part of my hair rainbow. I wanted your opinion, would it be best just to dye the roots to a certain point or just the tips up to a certain point of my hair?

This is more of a personal preference, I’ve seen it done both ways and personally I prefer seeing the tips done. I think it would be easier for maintenance as well - if you were to dye the roots down, you might have colorful dye run into your natural color and stain it.

Hello! I'm planning on coloring my hair with Manic Panic and was wondering if you could help me decide on which shades? I want to do mostly purple and have pink intermittently mixed in certain areas, I have medium blonde hair that will probably be slightly lightened before I dye it, and I want the colors to be a little lighter/brighter than some pictures I've seen on their website. Which purple and pink from them would you recommend and do you have any advice when it comes to using the product?

For lighter/brighter colors, I definitely recommend bleaching your hair to as pale of a blonde/white as you can get it - especially for any of the Manic Panic purples. They are the shades I have the most trouble with in my hair.

As for the shades —
Ultra Violet is a more blue toned purple. Looks purple outside, blue inside.
Purple Haze is my favorite of the purples, it’s a very pretty dark, but warm purple with good coverage and staying power.
Electric Amethyst is a gorgeous pastel color, but won’t show up unless it’s over pretty much white hair.
Lie Locks is slightly darker than Electric Amethyst, but still looks best over pretty much white hair.
Mystic Heather is a more pinkish pastel purple, again with needing to be over white.
Manic Panic just released a new color called Violet Night which looks really lovely. Haven’t tried it yet, but definitely have plans to.

For the pinks:
Hot Hot Pink is my go-to pink. It’s pretty dark when first applied, but after one wash goes to the perfect pink shade and stays vibrantly that way for weeks. By and far one of my top favorite MP colors.
New Rose is another that I love, it’s a little bit darker than Hot Hot Pink.
I haven’t had much success with Cotton Candy pink, I imagine it needs to be over white hair. Same with Pretty Flamingo, which appears to be slightly more neon.
Cleo Rose is a new pink, that looks like it will be slightly lighter than hot hot pink. Haven’t used it yet.
I’ve never used Fuchsia Shock, either, but it looks like it would be a pretty pinkish-purple.

Product use is pretty straight forward - wherever you put the color is where it will show up. If you put a darker color over a lighter color, it will take the darker color. Make the pink streaks thicker than the purple, as purple is heavier pigmented and will bleed into the pink when you wash. I sleep with my dye in my hair (I don’t know if I’d recommend it, but I never have problems doing so). Some people suggest applying heat with a blow dryer for more staying power. You can also wrap your hair in foil or saran wrap to keep the dye wet and active, which will also mean longer lasting color. Washing under cold water will help minimize bleeding and fading.

Not creepy at all, it’s actually one of the questions I get asked most frequently! :) I wash it once every three days when it’s freshly colored. If I’m trying to fade it out then I wash it every day.

hey, question: should i dye my hair purple? i wouldn't bleach it beforehand, so it'd just be a darkish purple. the thing that's stopping me is a.) would it look good? and b.) would it damage my hair pretty bad? i've bleached a lot of my hair before and it makes it look all shitty and dead so that's why i'm not bleaching it anytime soon. i just want an opinion. thanks! xo

As long as the dye is semi or demi permanent and not “fully” permanent, then it probably isn’t damaging at all. Most colorful dyes sit on top of the hair and stain it rather than chemically altering it (what permanent dyes/bleach does). I would suggest using a brand aside from Manic Panic over unbleached hair though - I used to use RAW’s Deep Purple over my natural hair color and it worked pretty well. I’ve heard mixed reviews from most people with regards to that brand though, so maybe look into Directions, Punky Color or Pravana Vivids? Hope that is at least somewhat helpful!

Your hair colors always look beautiful and clean when you switch color. When I redo my dye, the previous color tends to show through. Is there a product/rinse that you use between colors? Also, is there any secret to washing multi-colored hair so that the colors don't bleed and mix? Mine run/fade way too quickly.

After about 3 weeks (when my color starts really noticeably fading), I switch to shampooing with head ‘n shoulders or some other dandruff shampoo. It helps strip more of the color out. I usually shampoo it twice per shower for 2 weeks, and by the end of that it’s light enough to easily dye over. A lot of times I will use my faded color to “make” a new color… like the purple in my hair now is from putting pink over faded blue, and the green is from putting yellow over faded blue. I just like to experiment sometimes and see what I get! If you know a little color theory, things usually turn out alright. :)

As for washing it, upside down under cold water. Only shampoo once every three days.

‘n Rage Twisted Teal over bleached pale blonde hair. Stayed vibrant for the first month, was still definitely there but slightly less “shiny” the second month… It took four months before it was light enough to cover with purple.
